Tips: Healthy Eating on a Budget

Making healthy choices

  • Dried fruit is healthier and costs less than packaged “fruit” snacks. Buy dried fruit in large amounts and divide it into small portions.
  • Buy regular rice, oatmeal, and grits instead of the instant and flavored types - cheaper and healthier!
  • Avoid high-fat, low-nutrient snacks, even when they’re on sale.
  • Substitute beans and peas for meat, poultry, or fish. They cost less, are lower in fat and high in fiber.
  • Keep raw veggies and apples cut up in the fridge and low-fat pretzels in the pantry.
