Tips: Healthy Eating on a Budget

Preparing for shopping

  • Plan meals and shop for them. This will cut down on impulse buying and having “nothing in the house to eat.”
  • Try to use one trip to buy the groceries you need each week.
  • Avoid running out of foods midweek. The more times you enter the grocery store, the more money you will spend.
  • Don't shop for groceries when you're hungry. Make a grocery list before leaving the house and stick to it!
  • Look for the unit price on the shelf sticker to compare the cost of similar foods.
  • Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean it’s the best deal. Be sure to check the unit price.
