Healthy Eating: Healthy Affordable Halloween Treats

Are you wondering what kind of treats to hand out this Halloween? Try to give tasty snacks that are good for kids. Check out your local dollar store for some of these healthy ideas:
Halloween Picture
  • Sugar-free gum
  • Small package of nuts or raisins
  • Packages of instant cocoa mix
  • Cereal bars
  • 100% Juice boxes
  • Small bags of popcorn
  • Stickers, crayons, chalk, erasers
  • Rubber spiders or worms

What should you do with all that candy that comes home? Remember....moderation is key!

  • Feed kids a big healthy dinner before they go out. A full tummy will help prevent eating extra sweets.
  • Set the rules before your kids go trick or treating. Limit their intake to 1 or 2 pieces after the holiday.
  • Offer bite-size chocolates instead of whole candy bars.
  • Store extra candy in a closed container out of sight.
  • Freeze some for later use.
  • Donate uneaten candy to a local school or church.
  • Use extra candy in a recipe or when decorating cookies.
