Planning Meals: Storing Staple Foods

Below is a list of some staple foods that you can keep in your house for cooking a wide range of meals! Click on each of the products to find out how long they can be stored.

Grains Rice, pasta, oatmeal, bread, white flour
Canned foods Vegetables, fruit, soup, tuna fish
Dried foods Beans, fruit
Frozen foods Produce, meats (ground beef or turkey, chicken breasts)
Miscellaneous Oil, eggs, milk, peanut butter

Grains- Grains should be stored in a cool, dry place. Can be stored for up to one year. Try freezing bread to make it last longer.

Canned Foods- Can be stored for 6 to 12 months

Dried Foods- Store in tightly sealed containers. Canned or dried beans can be stored up to one year.

Frozen Foods- Store in air-tight containers in the freezer for up to one year.

Oil- Can be stored unopened for up to 2 years, but will last for about 1 year once opened.

Eggs- Check the expiration date on the side of the package.

Milk-

  • Non-fat dry milk powder can be stored up to one year unopened.
  • Evaporated skim milk (canned) can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.
  • For fresh milk, check the sell by date on the package. If it is stored properly and not left out for long periods of time, the milk should last 5-7 days past the sell-by date.

Peanut butter- Store in a cool, dry place. Unopened peanut butter should last about 2 years. After it has been opened, it should last about 3 months.
